Electrical Control Updates & Upgrades

Many rubber processing machines in current production are operating with electrical controls that have aged considerably. Relay-based logic, obsolete operator panels, and dated safety circuits are common in equipment that is otherwise mechanically sound. Updating the controls is often the most practical way to extend the useful life of a good machine and bring it into compliance with current safety expectations.

VFD (Variable Frequency Drive) Installation

Electronic speed control replacing fixed-speed drive systems. Allows roll or motor speed to be adjusted to match compound requirements; provides soft-start to reduce mechanical stress during startup; improves energy efficiency. Evaluated as part of the full drive arrangement—not treated as a standalone electrical upgrade.

PLC Upgrades

Replacement of relay-based or obsolete control logic with programmable logic controllers for more reliable, maintainable, and capable cycle control.

Operator Control Station Replacement

New front and rear operator panels with current-standard Start, Stop, Emergency Stop, Jog/Reverse, and speed control interfaces. Installed and tested as part of rebuild or as standalone service.

Temperature Control Modernization

Replacement of outdated thermocouple controllers and temperature regulators with current digital systems for improved setpoint accuracy and process repeatability on heated presses and platens.

Safety Circuit Updates

Emergency stop systems, overhead rocker bar replacement, door interlocks, and other safety-related electrical components updated to current standards. OSHA stopping-distance testing and certification where applicable.

Refurbished Control Assemblies

Refurbished electrical control panels and assemblies available for mills and presses where a complete new panel is not required.

Hydraulic Control System Service

Hydraulic control systems on rubber presses and mixers include directional valves, pressure relief valves, proportional valves, pressure transducers, and manifold assemblies. As these components age, they can cause pressure inconsistency, slow or erratic press movement, leakage, and cycle timing problems that affect part quality. WCRM services hydraulic control systems as part of press refurbishments and as standalone repair work.

Valve Replacement & Service

Directional control valves, pressure relief valves, check valves, and proportional valves inspected, serviced, or replaced.

Pressure Transducer Updates

Replacement of outdated or failed pressure transducers with current sensors compatible with modern control interfaces.

Manifold Inspection & Repair

Hydraulic manifold inspection for internal leakage, cracking, and seal condition. Repair or replacement as required.

Hydraulic Power Unit Service

Pump inspection and replacement, reservoir cleaning, filter system service, and fluid analysis as part of press refurbishment or standalone service.

The Right Time to Address Controls

A rebuild provides the most practical opportunity to address controls. When a mill or press is already disassembled for mechanical restoration, integrating control updates at the same time eliminates the need for a separate service window and ensures the electrical and hydraulic systems are matched to the restored mechanical components. Installing a VFD or replacing an operator panel on a machine that has not been fully inspected risks masking underlying mechanical issues the controls cannot fix.

Can a VFD be added to a mill that currently runs at fixed speed? 

In many cases, yes. Feasibility depends on the existing drive motor type, electrical infrastructure, and the condition of the mechanical drive components. WCRM evaluates the full drive arrangement when discussing VFD retrofits rather than treating it as a standalone electrical swap.
